How a Handbag is Made in the USA

The process of how a handbag is designed, then a sample made, and then manufactured by a USA manufacturer is very interesting and instructive. It shows how much hard work and energy go into the final product.

First, the designer puts together her inspirations for the season. These include tears from magazines, photographs, vintage handbags, and even can include movies or music.

Then the designer sketches out possible styles. When she's decided which styles she wants to make, she begins to do a detailed technical drawing of the style. For most better brands, this is done by hand, then imported into the computer.

Measurements, hardware specifications, and materials are indicated for each element. Certain details might require additional drawings to make the desired result clear. Stitch color, strap padding, linings, and more are indicated.

The designer brings the technical package to the manufacturer and after a careful discussion, the manufacturer begins the process of making the pattern. The pattern is what will be used to cut the first sample.

Once the pattern is completed, the manufacturer will make a mock-up of the style in available leather for the designer to review. If the designer approves the construction, the manufacturer gives the designer a list of materials needed per bag. This includes leather (in square feet), rivets and other hardware pieces, and lining yardage.

The designer goes to various suppliers online and in person where she purchase enough materials to make samples of her handbag in the various leathers/linings she intends to use. Once the materials are supplied, the manufacturer will cut each leather piece by hand to match the pattern. Sometimes many adjustments to the pattern have to be made to get the best look. The sample is sewn together and hardware pieces applied. It can take one whole day to make one sample bag.

The designer reviews the finished sample. If it is approved, it is time to sell the style and then place a production order! Meanwhile, the finished pattern is taken to the die cutter. The die cutter will turn the pattern pieces into metal dies that are fabricated for each piece of the handbag. These dies will allow the leather to be cut quickly for the production quantity of handbags. Metal dies are very expensive, but once they are finished, they can be used over and over again.

There is usually a minimum order per style. The manufacturer will quote a labor price and any added materials which help to give the bag its shape and feel, like interfacing and padding, and upon approval will begin the process of manufacturing the bag. Several people work putting together the bags, each person doing a portion of the labor.

Finally, the bags are finished, and the designer comes and picks them up to take them to the store or their other customers!

That's a lot of work from everyone involved, and it goes towards making your new beautiful handbag. That's why we recommend buying from a company that proudly makes their handbags in the United States, like Be & D, Corrente, and Hayden-Harnett.
